Should You Upgrade to the Thermomix TM7? The Honest Truth No One Tells You

I got my Thermomix TM7 three weeks ago, and I was pleasantly surprised it arrived in just eight weeks instead of the fourteen weeks I’d been advised when I paid for it. That alone felt like a little win. Now that I’ve had time to really play with it, lots of people have been asking me the same thing: is the TM7 worth it? So here’s my honest opinion: what I love, what I don’t, and what I think you should consider before you decide for yourself.

The Questions I Get Asked All the Time

If you follow me on Instagram or WhatsApp, you’ll know I get asked these every week:

  • “Should I upgrade my TM6?”

  • “Is the Thermomix TM7 really better?”

  • “Is it worth waiting 14 weeks for a TM7?”

  • “Will I actually use the new features?”

  • “Should I look for a second-hand Thermomix instead?”

And the big one: “What would YOU do, Sara?

I’ve been a Thermomix user for over 22 years and an advisor for 12 until June 2024. I’ve cooked for my family with every generation from the TM31 to the TM7. So here’s my honest answer to upgrade to the Thermomix TM7 and why it’s not a simple yes or no.

Why Some People Want to Upgrade to Thermomix TM7 And Why Some Dont Want

Let’s talk about FOMO. The fear of missing out is real. Many people just love having the latest technology, especially if they cook a lot, can afford it, and want that shiny new screen on the counter.

Price definitely plays a part too. I still remember when I started as an advisor, a Thermomix cost under €1,000 in Ireland. Now (€1599), by the time you add extra accessories like a second bowl (€249), a carrying bag (€59) and the TM7 cutter+spiralizer (€159), you’re not far off spending €2,000. For some families, that’s a big decision and it should be.

For me personally, one big reason I bought the TM7 was the promise of a quieter motor. I have two small girls, and they don’t appreciate very noisy things in the kitchen, so that alone felt like a good enough reason to try it and see how we got on. And yes, I’ll admit, FOMO got the best of me too. Clodagh put it perfectly when she said to me, “Well, you should always have the latest, considering you’re the expert!” So I went for it and bought it.

I paid in one go, but I was also offered the option to spread the cost over 3, 6, or 12 months, interest free. It’s great to have that flexibility, especially if you’re on the fence about the investment.

So yes, it was a mix of wanting the quiet motor, a bit of FOMO, and the push from a friend who reminded me that, as someone who’s cooked with Thermomix for over two decades, I should know exactly what the latest model can do. For me, that made sense.

But everyone has their own thinking process. For some, it’s about whether the features genuinely add value to daily cooking. For others, it’s about the budget, timing, or simply how comfortable they feel trying something new.

I see it with my own family too. My husband didn’t hesitate for a second. He turned the TM7 on, ignored Cookidoo, and went straight to manual cooking because that’s his style. He’s not afraid of trying new things and loves experimenting. He’s actually not a big fan of Cookidoo because if he’s missing an ingredient, he just gives up, so the TM7’s freestyle cooking really suits him.

My mum was the opposite. She was so excited to open the TM7 with me, but when she went to cook her soup, she used the TM6 instead. She told me the TM7 looked a bit too technical, and she didn’t want to break it. She preferred to wait until we could do it together. It reminded me how important a good demo can be to face that first recipe fear.

So it depends on you. Are you the kind who jumps in head first? Or do you like to watch, read, and feel confident first? There’s no right or wrong.

What I Love About TM7 (and What I Don’t)

Here’s my honest list after a few weeks of using it.

So far, the improvements are good, but for me, they’re not mind-blowing.

When I look back, the upgrade from the TM31 to the TM5 was huge. Suddenly, you had recipes on the screen and a much more modern design. Then the jump from the TM5 to the TM6 was another real game changer with new modes like cooking at high temperatures (160 degrees when before was only 120 degrees in previous models), slow cooking for up to 8 hours, fermenting yoghurt or dough, and sous-vide, those really improved the way we cooked. This time, the TM7 feels more like small refinements that make everyday cooking nicer, rather than a dramatic leap.

What I love:

  • It’s so quiet. The new motor is brilliant for busy families, especially with kids napping.

  • The bowl is insulated, which means it holds the temperature really well. I love that I can cook lunch at 11 am and it stays warm until we eat at 1 pm, no need to reheat. I’ve also noticed that dough rises much faster, which is a nice bonus.

  • The new blade system is a big win — no more wrestling to get it out.

  • I like that I can search for recipes directly on Cookidoo on the TM7 screen and select the number of portions there and then and add notes — no need to do that on the phone app.

  • The new Varoma has 45% more capacity than before, which is brilliant for me because I love cooking in levels and using the Varoma as much as possible. The TM7 Varoma fits in the TM6 so that is handy. However, the new Steaming Mode isn’t very useful if you don’t already know how long each ingredient needs to steam so you still need to use your own judgement there or go to cookidoo for a recipe. It would be nice if it had clear ingredient guidelines built in, like the chopping mode does; that would make it much more helpful for everyday cooking.

  • The base is much easier to clean and move around compared to previous models — it feels more practical if you ever need to transport it or tidy up quickly.

What I don’t love:

  • There’s no printed guide in the box. It’s all on the screen. I’m old-fashioned; I love flicking through a book.

  • The Thermomix sensor accessory isn’t in the modes screen — you have to know which recipes use it. If I hadn’t been an advisor for years, I wouldn’t have known where to look.

  • The bowl is slightly heavier than the TM6 — not a big deal but worth knowing.

  • Open Cooking is a new mode but there’s only one type of recipe for it on Cookidoo at the moment. I’m sure more will be added over time, but it would have been nice to have more options straight away.

  • The cutter isn’t compatible between models — so I can’t use the one I already have for my TM6. I plan to keep my TM6 as well, so it’s not ideal having to have two separate cutters for each machine.

  • A second bowl wasn’t available to buy yet when I ordered. I’ve always loved having two bowls as it makes batch cooking or switching between recipes so much easier.

  • The wait time can be up to 14 weeks — that’s a long time if you’re excited to get started now.

My mum, who’s now on her fourth Thermomix model, loved it once she felt confident using it. My husband liked it straight away because the screen is much more responsive, even if your hands are wet, and the software works really well, it feels faster and smoother to use. . It really does come down to your cooking personality and preference.

I do think things will improve with time. The great thing about Thermomix TM7 is that you get software updates every so often, so new features and tweaks are added as you go. And I wouldn’t be surprised if they launch new accessories down the line, like a bigger capacity bowl, but for now, that’s just me guessing, as nothing has been confirmed by the company yet.

One other thing worth mentioning is that there was no special offer or bundle when I ordered which makes sense because so many people want the TM7 already. The rumour is that there may not be any offers for this model in future either. So if you’re waiting in the hope of getting a better deal, just keep in mind you might be waiting a long time, it may not happen.

I’m also sharing my honest thoughts on the TM7 in my Instagram stories as I cook and test different things. They’re all saved in my Instagram highlights if you’d like to follow along.

If you’d like more detail on all the differences, I’ve written a separate Thermomix TM6 vs TM7 comparison — you can read that here .

Is It Worth It If You’re New to Thermomix?

If you’re new, the Thermomix TM7 is the only model you can buy brand-new now, so you’ll automatically get the latest design and features, which is brilliant.

But 14 weeks is a long time to wait for some families. I know life can’t always stop for that. If you want to get started sooner, I always recommend looking for a second-hand TM6 or TM5. There are so many good ones out there.

I run a friendly Facebook group - Preloved Thermomix items in Ireland — you can join here. Many of my own old clients who are upgrading share their machines there, which really helps as there’s so much scam out there these days. But remember, you still need to do your own checks; always review the machine in person, make sure it’s fully paid off, and check the warranty details before you decide to buy. It’s your responsibility to be confident it’s right for you. I don’t take any responsibility for the sale. I just set up the group to help connect genuine buyers and sellers safely.

Sometimes it’s nice to join the Thermomix family straight away rather than wait so do whatever feels right for you.

What I’d Do If I Were You

Here’s my honest take. If your TM6 is working perfectly, you love it, and the new features don’t make you feel genuinely excited, don’t feel pressured to upgrade. Keep cooking and enjoy it.

If you love having the newest gadget, you can afford it, and you like the idea of the bigger screen, quieter motor, and improved design, then go for it. For some people, it’s about joy as much as practicality.

If you’re new to Thermomix, the TM7 is a fantastic place to start, just remember the wait time, and if you don’t want to wait, have a look at the second-hand market.

It really is a case-by-case thing so here are a few questions to ask yourself before you decide:

  • What do I love about my current Thermomix and what frustrates me?

  • Do the new features solve any real problems for me or are they just ‘nice to have’?

  • Will I actually use the new modes or do I mostly stick to the basics?

  • How do I feel about waiting for delivery — am I happy to wait or do I want to get started sooner?

  • Is it the right time for me financially? Would a payment plan make it easier?

  • Am I excited by the upgrade or do I feel I ‘should’ get it because everyone else is?

Take a moment to really think about what matters to you and your family. There’s no right or wrong answer, it’s all about what works best for you.
